The only wild gymnosperm Ephedra in Western Rajasthan is a small climbing, dioecious shrub with many  branched stems, minute leaves. Male flowers yellow greenish, 1-3 together on 1-2 cm long peduncle. Female
flowers sessile and 2-3 in numbers. Fruit is globose, milky white semi transparent, fleshy and two seeded. Seed planoconvex, brown, glabrous acute at apex and rounded at the base. Flowering and fruiting in January to April.

Usage: The fruits are eaten by natives in the time of scarcity. It is a substitute of E. gerardiana. Extract of plant has ephedrine which is used in respiratory and heart diseases. It is also used in diphtheria and pneumonia. The  dried powder or infusion is useful in acute rheumatism.
